All registrars have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in an extended skill area for up to 6 months as part of their standard registrar training and this replaces up to 6 months of GPT3 training time.
An extended skill can be undertaken as either 2 placements of 3 months in different disciplines or a full 6 month placement in one discipline.
It is not mandatory but should be regarded as an opportunity.
There is a wide range of extended skill areas which can be considered and a variety of settings in which they can be done.
Acceptable extended skill areas include:
- Paediatrics
- General medicine (Internal medicine)
- Occupational health
- Sports medicine
- Indigenous health
- Obstetrics and gynaecology
- Emergency
- Population health
- Palliative care
- Psychiatry
- Dermatology
There may be other areas of interest which registrars could consider and these should be discussed with the Director of Medical Education, Dr Peter Clements.
Like ARSPs these are excellent opportunities which you may not find easy to access post fellowship.
If you have an interest in any of these areas or others not mentioned, you should discuss this and, if SF agrees to the proposal, you should submit the appropriate application form to Sturt Fleurieu for approval. Once this approval is formalised registrars should apply to the appropriate hospital or clinic in the hope of securing the position.
