Sturt Fleurieu “covers the skin”
Sun damaged skin, allergy or infection?
BCC or SCC?
Ointment, cream or lotion?
Not clear about what a ‘skin check’ means?
These are just some of the questions that will be answered by derm-start.
Dermatology problems are very common in general practice and yet it is an area in which registrars and experienced GP’s often feel vulnerable. Why? Like many specialty areas, dermatology has often been taught in a hospital setting where many of the skin conditions usually encountered in training are at their very worst. The challenge in general practice is that many of these conditions can look quite different but they can still be readily managed. At the same time, of course, we must ensure that serious conditions are not missed.
derm-start has been developed by GP’s with a special interest in dermatology. It emphasizes the primary care approach to problem solving in skin conditions including the importance of history taking, thorough examination, office based testing, diagnosis and best practice management.
derm-start has been developed for you to undertake in general practice using the ‘start’ learning format. It is a modular program which links well researched and relevant readings to your patients through Key Clinical Activities.
Time is devoted to discussion of clinical photography and one important goal of derm-start is to encourage skills in this area.
As well as the basic program there is a series of 3 workshops which will address in more detail important practical aspects of dermatology in general practice.
Topics covered include:
- basic skills and treatment modalities
- sun and the skin
- clinical photography
- eczema and dermatitis
- psoriasis
- infections
- exanthems
- acne
- urticaria
So if you have the same anxieties about encounters with skin problems in general practice, derm-start is for you
