Your start to a rewarding and challenging career in general practice.

To make sure you get the most from your general practice expereince and become the best doctor possible, Sturt Fleurieu has developed gp-start.

An all-inclusive training guide, gpstart  takes you through the basics of general practice in a structured, coordinated and systematic way and helps with the transition from hospital to general practice.

Comprised of 15 training modules completed over six months, gp-start also provides more than 200 supporting reference readings and website links that are updated each year.

The modules are:

  • Introduction to your supervisor
  • The business of general practice
  • The general practice consultation
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Paediatrics
  • Aged Care
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Mental Health
  • Women's Health
  • Men's Health
  • Lethargy
  • Headache
  • Fitness to drive
  • Worker's Compensation

gp-start has been specifically developed in conjunction with senior GP Training Supervisors. It focuses on a range of topics you'll need to be familiar with to operate within a general practice, including the diagnosis and management of common clinical problems in patients and practical elements such as the business of general practice, the general practice consultation and worker's compensation.

A range of online evaluation tools and feedback mechanisms are also provided to ensure the program constantly evolves and grows.

gp-start provides you with the knowledge and medical skills to give you the best start in your new, exciting career in general practice.

We have identified Key Clinical Activities which are linked to learning outcomes and the training curriculum of both the RACGP and ACRRM. This structure allows you to incorporate systematic learning into your daily work and by working through these activities over six months of basic training you will set yourself up for advanced training and the fellowship exam.

If you want the best start, the best knowledge and the best skills, if you want to learn as efficiently as you can, then gp-start is the program for you.

"The experience I gained working as a rural GP registrar is invaluable. gp-start made transition from hospital to community based practice much easier, I would recommend it to any basic term registrar".
