Location
a) Description of practice location Victor Harbor is a coastal commercial and tourist centre situated 80 km south of Adelaide. It's residential population is approximately 12,000 but with adjoining areas (Middleton, Port Elliot, Mount Compass, Inman Valley and Waitpinga) rises to nearly 18,000. During the holiday period, the population is said to triple. The practice is conveniently situated on the main street of Victor Harbor. We also have a clinic at Port Elliot with four consulting rooms a treatment room area and an adjoining pharmacy.
b) Health and medical information about the region South Coast District Hospital has 38 bed for acute medical, surgical, paediatric and obstetric cases. There is a 18 bed private wing. There are 3 coronary care beds with overhead and central monitoring and a 4th monitored bed in high dependency area. Two operating theatres and recovery suite for visiting surgeons and local GP's who have regular operating lists and provide a range of anaesthetics including, general, regional, spinal and epidural to an extensive list of visiting specialists. There is a third minor theatre situated in the casualty area.
c) Practice type and size The clinic is owned by eleven equal sharing partners. There are also three associates employed and in addition to this registrars and interns from Sturt Fleurieu plus we have students from both Flinders and Adelaide Universities. The clinic has excellent facilities consisting of a large waiting room, separated play area with adjoining reception, records and accounts offices. There are 17 consulting rooms. A casualty type treatment area has four curtained and three closed cubicles, each having more specific purposes eg. acupuncture, nebuliser and spirometry, eye (slit lamp available), cryotherapy, plaster, ECG and minor procedures. This same area also has an open area for venepuncture and ear syringing performed by nursing staff. There is a separate treatment room of 35 square metres fully equipped to carry out minor surgical procedures. There is a separated patient and staff toilets/showers and stairs lead up to a large staff area and typist's room. The area upstairs includes kitchen, storage rooms a large staff area and outdoor balcony.

After hours One GP is on duty with one reserve from 8am to 8pm on a 7 day roster (covering emergencies in the treatment room during the day Monday to Friday and Saturday morning). From 8pm to 8am

7 days per week, after hours emergencies are covered by locums employed by the SCDH
Weekends As above plus there are locums at the hospital on duty from 8pm each Friday night through to 8am Monday morning. In addition to this locums are on duty at the hospital for long weekends, public holidays, and during the holiday periods.
Hospital Ward visits are prior to consulting hours.
Nursing home visits For those doctors involved they usually have a set time each week to visit the nursing homes that they cover.

Facilities offered by practice Each Registrar has their own room with Broadband Internet connection on each desktop. We use Medical Director for clinical and Zedmed for patient accounting (from end of July we will also be using Zedmed for both clinical and patient accounts). There is also a well equipped small op theatre for minor surgical procedures, an ECG room, and the treatment room has two mobile blood pressure pulse oximeter machines. We have just been successful in becoming a Rural Health Education Foundation site. There is a very spacious staff area upstairs.
