a) Description of practice location Our Medical Centre is located facing the Flagstaff Hill Shopping Centre which is just off Blacks Road opposite Flagstaff Hill Primary School. Facilities at the Shopping Centre include a bakery, deli, pharmacy and a Foodland supermarket. Flagstaff Hill is a green leafy suburb set in the foot hills south of the Adelaide plains. It is a few minutes by car south of Flinders Medical Centre. The Practice catchment area includes Flagstaff Hill, Happy Valley, Aberfoyle Park, Woodcroft, and adjacent suburbs.
b) Health and medical information about the region A lot of our patients work in middle management, small business, schools and the public service. Many are working mothers. A few are involved in the wine industry which is the main local industry. The morbidity of our population consists mainly of chronic lifestyle diseases such as obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Asthma is common as are childhood illnesses and emotional disorders. There are a small number of immigrants from around the world, in particular from Iran.
c) Practice type and size Family medical practice with 2 owner principals and 3 salaried assistant GPs who work part-time. The practice employs a Practice Manager, two junior receptionists, one Registered and one Enrolled nurse. We have over 5000 active patients with a socioeconomic and age demographic that is close to the Australian average. 22% of our patients are under aged 20 and 14% are over 60.

a) Access to specialists and other health professionals The area is well serviced by physiotherapists, podiatrists, psychologists, dieticians and chemists. Blackwood Community Hospital, Flinders Private and Noarlunga Hospital able to admit medical, surgical, obstetric and paediatric patients. Flinders Medical Centre is our nearby tertiary referral centre.
b) Aspects of medicine in your practice that will be a feature of registrar training The doctors and staff at Flagstaff Hill Medical Centre are committed to providing comprehensive family and primary health care including preventative medicine and management of chronic illness. We run dedicated programmes for Diabetes, Aged Care, Hypertension and Coronary Heart Disease and paediatric immunisation. We provide Shared Antenatal Care. We encourage colorectal screening for colon cancer. We remove lesions and skin neoplasms, (including flaps where appropriate) and will encourage registrars to become proficient in these skills. One of us (JRG) examines retinae in diabetes and will teach this. Home and aged care facility visiting is a part of our service and will be expected of registrars. Mental health and its management is an interest of some our GPs.
