Location
Description of practice location

Angaston is one of the three main towns making up the heart of the Barossa Valley which is famous for fine wine and food production. It is located 85km north of Adelaide and is within 8km of the towns of Nuriootpa and Tanunda. Angaston has a population of approximately 2,000 and the nearby Barossa area has a population of approximately 18,000. Angaston looks very much like a European village with historical buildings and plenty of fine alfresco restaurants along the main street. The practice is conveniently located in the main street of Angaston next to the pharmacy. We also have remote clinics at Swan Reach and Blanchetown which are 80km to the east. The practice services most of the area in between.

Health and medical information about the region

Health information The Barossa region has two general hospitals. One is located at Angaston which is only 1km from the practice. The Angaston Hospital is a 26 bed hospital offering inpatients, surgical and 24 hour accident and emergency services. The other hospital is located at Tanunda and is a 23 bed hospital offering inpatients, surgical, obstetric and 24 hour accident and emergency services. There is an operating theatre for visiting surgeons and local GPs who have regular operating lists.

Practice type and size

The practice is owned equally by 8 partners (6 males and 2 females). There is also one assistant employed by the practice in addition to the registrars. We also have full time students from both Flinders and Adelaide Universities. The clinic building is old and traditional from the outside and modern and fresh on the inside with excellent facilities. There are eight consulting rooms, a large waiting area, a three bed treatment room, nurse's station, student's study room and a large meeting/lunch room. The treatment room has three full time nurses and caters for ECG, spirometry, cryotherapy, plaster, immunisations, removals and minor surgery. There is a second facility in the same street which is called the Angaston Better Health Unit. This facility has four consulting rooms and a reception area and houses our mental health nurse, chronic disease nurse, psychologist and Healthscope Pathology collection centre. This unit was set up predominately as a Chronic Disease Management Unit.

Details of practice support
On-site and after-hours supervision to meet professional standards On most days we have between 5 - 8 doctors consulting at the practice. Each of the GPs is able to offer assistance during the day and one of the partners is rostered as second on call when the registrars are on call.
Provision is made for registrars to attend education activities Education is a priority at our practice and there is no restriction to the number of days of attendance at education events.
Access to clinical resources/reference materials We have a library in the student's room, but we also have access to plenty of online resources such as ETG Complete, MIMS, accessing Fitness to Drive, MASTA, RACGP Red Book, Bandolier etc.
Adequate consulting space, IT facilities and equipment for registrar We have excellent modern consulting rooms and they are always available for the registrar. We have excellent modern consulting rooms and they are always available for the registrar. We use Windows 2007 in a Terminal Services Environment and Zedmed is used for both clinical and appointment purposes. We use external IT Consultants to keep our computer equipment working efficiently.
Appropriate space available for teaching purposes We have a modern meeting room and the student's room that can be utalised when required, but most of the teaching happens in the supervisor's consulting room.
Expectations of registrar workload
Our GPs normally have 15 minute appointments. Registrars can determine how long they want their appointments to be. In the first few weeks they may suggest 20 or 30 minute appointments and gradually move to 15 minute appointments. There is no pressure to increase the length of time of appointments. The longer initial appointments give the registrar time to seek advice from one of the GPs if required. Due to the way the appointment system is designed, the registrar will receive a balanced patient base.
Facilities offered by practice

A fully equipped and stocked consulting room will be available. We have a very skilled and caring medical team and great, friendly staff. We set a high standard for ourselves for patient care and general practice management. The practice is located in a lovely setting and all the best restaurants/cafes are only meters away. We have a dynamic meeting/lunch room with a great coffee machine.
