Location
Description of practice location

Rhylyn Medical Services has three surgeries: Aldinga Medical Centre, Moore Street Clinic at Willunga and Moana Medical Centre. Aldinga (the main surgery) is situated 45 minutes south of Adelaide and is close to the beach and the Aldinga Scrub in a rapidly expanding area. Wineries and vineyards abound amongst the rolling hills of this semi-rural region as well as many fine casual dining establishments. Farming and fishing are still important activities in the area. Local handicraft and fresh produce markets are regular occurrences and offer some exciting products demonstrating the considerable talents of the locals. There are a number of primary, high schools and area schools in the region all serviced by school buses as well as quite a few denominational schools from R-7 and R-13.

There has been a huge increase in the population in the last few years with new housing estates continuing to be developed. The population has changed from a predominately older base to one with many young families. Infrastructure has been slow to follow. However, the local shopping centre now boasts two major supermarket chains as well as a host of other services.

Health and medical information about the region

There are three nursing homes in the region with one at Aldinga and two in McLaren Vale. Many of these residents are cared for by Rhylyn's doctors. The local hospital at McLaren Vale - McLaren Vale and Districts War Memorial Hospital, is serviced by the doctors of the region, however, there is no resident doctor there. Noarlunga Hospital provides a full range of emergency medical and surgical services to the community as well as mental health services. It also provides in and out-patient allied health services via the emergency department and direct from the community.

Practice type and size Rhylyn Medical Services currently has 14 doctors and one registrar working within the practice over 3 surgeries. However, as many only work part-time, we average 9 full-time equivalents. The doctors are ably assisted by 5 (3 full-time equivalent) practice nurses including a dedicated mental health nurse, as well as reception and administrative staff. We offer nursing home and home visits as well as looking after patients in the local hospital where appropriate. We have facilities for minor procedures and offer the usual activities of a comprehensive practice. We also have a number of visiting specialists and a pathology patient centre. We regularly host third year medical students attached to the Onkaparinga Clinical Education Experience (OCEP program) at Flinders University. We are currently undergoing significant extensions which will enhance our ability to accommodate more clinical staff. The extensions are due for completion in early 2012.
