Parents of disabled advised to lobby Government. Speak out on issues, carers urged

PARENTS and carers of South Australians with disabilities have been urged to fight for a role in the formulation of government policy. Women's Health Ministerial Advisory Committee chair Jocelyn Auer says there is a compelling case for carers to be heard. "Too often, people are expected to disappear at home, never to be seen again,'' she said.

DR Ian McCombe is walking his dog after work when I call. It's dark, so he carries a torch. "I'm spotting crocs in the lake as we speak," he says. "Freshwater, of course."

Dr McCombe is talking from Kununurra, population 6100, in remote Western Australia. He is in the second month of a six-month term, having taken up the offer of an indigenous training post through Sturt Fleurieu General Practice Education and Training, a regional training provider (RTP) in South Australia.

The Bridge Clinic, a general practice in Murray Bridge in South Australia, has been awarded The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners' (RACGP) General Practice of the Year Award for 2005.

The General Practice of the Year Award recognises the outstanding work of general practices; the committment of the practice to accreditation; the standard of facilities offered to patients and staff; and the services offered to the local community.

When I (PJ) explained to one of my younger colleagues that I was writing an article about recruitment and retention of doctors to the country, I finished by asking what made her come here and stay. "I want to work and still have a life" was her spontaneous answer - a response that encompasses most of what we have tried to achieve in this medical practice.

Hills nets $500,000 for palliative care

More than $500,000 has been allocated to the Hills to improve palliative care services in the region over the next three years.

The Adelaide Hills Division of General Practice is one of eight divisions in Australia chosen for funding under the Federal Government's rural palliative care program.
